Multipliers are incredible for distance because the line comes off in a straight line, but they have a steep learning curve. If you don't control the spool with your thumb correctly, you end up with a "bird's nest" or a professional-grade tangle that can end your fishing day in seconds.

For most of us, modern long distance surf casting reels in the spinning category are the way to go. They've caught up so much in technology that the distance gap has narrowed significantly. Plus, they are way easier to use at night or when the wind is blowing directly into your face. You can just open the bail and let it rip without worrying about a catastrophic backlash.
